As summer kicks into high gear, we here at Athens Ford are thinking about the same things you are – namely, enjoying all that our great state has to offer. As we’re planning those summer outings in our Ford trucks, SUVs and crossovers, we’ve got our eyes on all of the fantastic places we have to camp here in Northern Georgia. And while everyone has their favorite, it’s hard to pick one that’s better than all the rest. So we thought we’d offer up a list of what we consider the best places to camp in North Georgia. Here they are, in no particular order.

Black Rock Mountain State Park

At right around one and a half hours from Athens, Black Rock Mountain State Park is easy to get to, and a great place to camp for the entire family. There are hiking trails through streams and lush forests, a lake that’s stocked with fish, and some of the best views you’ll find anywhere in Georgia. There are also campsites for tents, campers and even your new Ford Explorer. This is a great place to go for a day or a weekend.

Vogel State Park

Resting at the base of Blood Mountain, Vogel State Park is one of the oldest and most popular camping destinations in the state. With more than 100 campsites and cottages, along with a swimming lake and picnic areas, Vogel has something for everyone. Located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, the drive to Vogel passes right by Brasstown Bald – the highest point in the state of Georgia. There are also hiking trails and plenty of waterfalls to explore.

Cloudland Canyon State Park

Located in the far northwest corner of our state, Cloudland Canyon State Park is one of the most beautiful in our state. It is full of rustic scenery, challenging hikes and features a nearly 2,000 foot gorge cut into the mountain by Sitton Gulch Creek. There is a trail down to the creek, and waterfalls that spill across shale into pools. With plenty of trails, and even stairs down to the gorge, this is a great place to hike. The campground features tent, trailer and walk-in camping – and even a few cottages for rent.

Enota Mountain Retreat

For a camping adventure of a different type, Enota Mountain Retreat is paradise at elevation. Nestled in the North Georgia Mountains between Helen, Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Hiawassee and Young Harris Georgia, Enota sports majestic waterfalls, babbling brooks and two trout ponds. This non-profit conservation facility is ranked as one of the top 9 camping destinations in the country by the Huffington Post. Offering full hook up RV sites, vacation rental cabins and good old fashioned tent camping Enota has something for everyone.

Fort Yargo State Park

Located just 25 miles from Athens, this upscale camping area offers visitors fully equipped cottages, 20-foot furnished yurts — canvas and pine tents with electricity — or an old fashioned, cozy campground. Hike down the Parks 18 miles of trails to discover the 1792 log fort that gives the park its name, or explore the areas lakes on a canoe, kayak or boat. Fort Yargo is also known for its wooded disc golf course that offers visitors a remarkably challenging family activity.

Lake Conasauga Recreation Area

For those who like a more rustic and out of the way place to camp, Lake Conasauga is a beautiful place to check out. With only primitive camping, it may not be the best place for your toddlers, but if you’re looking for rich natural beauty, this is it. Lake Conasauga is also right next to the Cohutta Wilderness, the largest wilderness area in Georgia. With boating, swimming and some exceptional fishing, this is one wild place you’ve got to check out.
