For decades, the go-to car for local law enforcement has been the Ford Crown Victoria. These cars are burly, American built sedans with enough power and capability to chase down bad guys and provide protection to officers. Just because it is one of the most popular cars to be used by the police already doesn’t mean Ford has an excuse to stop improving this vehicle and developing technologies that can make the lives of officers safer and easier.

Most recently Ford engineer, Randy Freiburger was able to go for a ride-a-long with some LA county police officers as they patrolled the streets of Compton, CA. Freiburger was on the lookout for aspects of police crusiers that could use updates and better technology. It was this time with the police that inspired the new “Surveillance Mode” system.

Surveillance Mode is a new technology from Ford that uses a series of back-up sensors and rear-mounted cameras to detect objects getting closer to the back of the vehicle. A small video feed appears in the rear-view mirror and allows officers to get a full view of everything directly behind their cars. The system even detects people approaching the vehicle from the rear and automatically closes the windows and locks the doors. These features will ideally help officers stay safe from threatening people trying to sneak up from behind their cars.

For those interested in this sort of technology, the Surveillance Mode system will also be available for civilian drivers interested in purchasing a new Ford vehicle as well.
