Ford EcoBoost Engine

Here at Athens Ford we’re always interested in big automotive news; while the excitement is usually focused on faster, stronger and bigger, this news is actually about one of the “small” Ford features.

For the third consecutive year, Ford’s little 1.0-liter EcoBoost Engine has been named the International Engine of the Year by automotive experts from around the world – and the news gets even better for folks in Athens, Jefferson, Loganville, Winder and all over Northeast Georgia.

While drivers in Europe have had a chance to experience the zippy little Ford EcoBoost power plant for the past three years, Americans have only recently gotten the opportunity. The 2014 Ford Fiesta was the first vehicle available in the U.S. to receive the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine as an option. Now, for the 2015 model year, this economical yet powerful engine will also be available as an option on the best-selling Ford Focus!

Big Power in a Small, Fuel-Efficient Package for Georgia Drivers

The design team at Ford Powertrain Engineering spent over 4 years and more than 5 million man-hours developing this revolutionary little engine. The result is a compact design that utilizes some advanced technologies usually found only in racing and other high-performance engine designs.

Some of the innovative features include:

  • Low-inertia turbocharger that spins at up to 248,000 RPM
  • Specially coated pistons and low-tension piston rings
  • Cylinder head with integrated and cooled exhaust manifold
  • Low-friction crank seals
  • Variable-displacement oil pump
  • Innovative flywheel and front pulley
  • Optimized oil pressure for improved fuel efficiency

Although the engine block on this small 3-cylinder engine could fit comfortably in the overhead bin of a commercial airplane, the advanced design provides optimum power for its size.

It seems strange to refer to a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder engine as powerful, yet the turbo-charged EcoBoost design has managed to deliver horsepower and torque ratings that exceed many 4-cylinder engines.

It offers:

  • Turbo-charged 3-cylinder design
  • Output rating of 123-horsepower
  • Torque rating of 148 lb-ft. using over-boost
  • Fuel efficiency of up to 45 MPG (based on Ford Fiesta measurements)
  • Immediate acceleration with no discernable turbo lag

While the competition for this year’s International Engine of the Year included entries from Mercedes, Ferrari, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi and others, the Ford EcoBoost 1.0-liter beat out all of these to take the top prize. The 82 members of the judging panel came from 34 countries, and have been designating a top engine for a total of 16 years.

Why the Selection of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost is So Impressive

This year’s competitors for engine of the year included a Mercedes 2.0-liter, a Volkswagen 1.4-liter, an Audi 2.5-liter and the ultra-high-performance Ferrari 4.5-liter 8-cylinder. Also included for the competition was Tesla’s all-electric powertrain, which took the prize for best “green” engine. But the Ford EcoBoost 1.0-liter beat out all of these impressive competitors because of its combination of power, efficiency and innovative design.

Here at Athens Ford, we’re excited to be able to offer these fuel-efficient and zippy EcoBoost engines in the Ford Focus and the new 2015 Ford Fusion vehicles. With their combination of features, style, looks and performance, these Ford cars are perfect for Georgia driving.

We invite all of our friends and neighbors in Athens, Winder, Jefferson, Loganville and all of Northeast Georgia to come on down and see the award-winning 1.0-liter engine in the Focus and Fusion, here in our Athens dealership. We think there are really no better vehicles for our Atlanta-area commute, with their combination of great gas mileage and zippy performance. We hope to see you here soon!
